The concept of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) originates in engineering and physics, describing the relationship between meaningful information (the “signal”) and irrelevant or random interference (the “noise”). A high SNR implies clarity, precision, and the ability to discern valuable data, while a low SNR suggests distortion, confusion, and loss of meaning. In the world of HiFi audio systems, for example, a clean sound, free of static, represents a high SNR. In digital communication, it indicates that the intended message is transmitted and received with minimal error.
Beyond circuits and sensors, this metaphor has profound relevance when applied to the realm of human consciousness. We live in a world filled with noise, and the signal peeks through the cracks. Moments of insight, intuition, and clarity are few and far between. Today’s world is filled with constant distractions and chatter. Incessant notifications, advertisements, and messages ceaselessly bombard our senses. They increase our anxiety, and need to react and respond - all the time. People clutch their phones like it’s an oxygen tank in a world devoid of air. People are constantly waiting for the next buzz, the next Dopamine hit. This is because we do not appreciate, let alone acknowledge, the inner field. The inner field where perception, thought, emotion, and awareness continually interact.
So, let’s enrich this paradigm with the third element of silence. One where you are completely still. I don’t just mean physically. I mean a mind of quietude, where you revel in sheer awareness. The Indian philosophical concept of Shunyata - nothingness or emptiness.
Our minds and souls need space.
The sages, and rishis before us taught us meditation, mindfulness (an oxymoron, since one is trying to empty one’s mind), and contemplative practices across spiritual traditions. These practices were intended to quiet and still the mind. To allow awareness, clarity, and your true nature to thrive. Mystics, monks and yogis, along with philosophers, and scientists alike have pointed toward this state: a mind so still and attuned, that reality reveals itself directly, unaltered by distortion. In such a state, you resonate perfectly with the quiet order of nature, life, and the cosmos.
In these pages, I intend to share my perspective on such aspects of technology, and the human spirit. To find, ponder, and cherish these moments. Above all else, I want you to live your best life.
Namaste and Welcome!
